Sustainability may be a new buzzword, but for most of human history it was how we lived! Everything had a purpose and a repurpose and maybe a few uses after that. Historically, breweries were located in the village near bakeries to facilitate the natural progression of beer grains becoming whole germ peasant breads. Spent grains are also a fantastic, all natural animal feed. Beer grain is loaded with nutrition! Proteins, enzymes, and fiber remains after the brewing process extracts fermentable sugars.
Lola the Derp (who is most definitely not the Akita Inu dog the shelter said she was, we think lab/beagle/pug thing) is turning 5 today!! We used spent beer grains, dried and milled, to make her a birthday cake fit for the awesome friend she is.
Lola's Barkday Cake
1 c natural peanut butter with oil
1/2 c vegetable oil
1 tsp vanilla (why not!)
1 1/3 c shredded carrots (4-5 large)
2 c spent beer grains
2 tsp baking soda
Combine all ingredients and spread in a tube pan. Bake 40 minutes. Cake should be slightly oily, dense and chewy– Perfect for a pup! Oils help the coat, while the recipe provides delicious proteins, fiber, and nutrients in a sweet treat.
